Essential BBQ Tools Every Grill Master Should Have

Essential BBQ Tools Every Grill Master Should Have

You don’t need a garage full of gadgets to grill well. But a handful of good tools makes every cookout safer, easier and tastier. Here are the essential BBQ tools every grill master should own, and what to look for when buying them in Canada.

1. Instant-Read Meat Thermometer

If you buy only one tool, make it this one. A digital instant-read thermometer tells you exactly when meat is safe and perfectly cooked. Look for a fast reading (a few seconds), a thin probe, and a backlit display for evening grilling. A leave-in probe thermometer with a wireless display is a great upgrade for long smokes.

2. Long Locking Tongs

Tongs are your main hand on the grill. Choose stainless steel tongs about 40–45 cm (16–18 in) long, with scalloped tips and a locking mechanism for storage. Avoid using a fork: piercing meat lets juices escape.

3. Wide Grill Spatula

A sturdy spatula with a thin, wide edge slides under burgers and fish without tearing them. A long handle keeps your hands away from the heat.

4. Grill Brush or Scraper

Clean grates mean less sticking and better flavour. If you use a wire-bristle brush, inspect it often and replace it when bristles loosen, as loose bristles can end up in food. Bristle-free options include coil brushes and wooden scrapers.

5. Chimney Starter (for charcoal)

A chimney starter lights charcoal quickly and evenly without lighter fluid. Fill it with charcoal, light newspaper or a fire starter underneath, and the coals are ready in 15–20 minutes.

6. Heat-Resistant Gloves

Silicone or aramid-fibre gloves let you move grates, adjust coals and handle hot cast iron safely. Look for a good grip and coverage over the wrist.

7. Basting Brush

A silicone basting brush is easy to clean and won’t shed bristles. Use it to brush on sauces and glazes during the final minutes of cooking.

8. Grill Basket

A perforated grill basket keeps vegetables, shrimp and small pieces from falling through the grates.

9. A Good Grill Cover

In Canada, a weather-resistant cover protects your grill from rain, snow, sun and freeze-thaw damage. Choose one that fits your model and has vents to prevent moisture build-up. Always let the grill cool before covering it.

10. Cutting Board and Sharp Knife

A large board with a juice groove, plus a sharp slicing knife, makes resting and carving meat easy. Keep separate boards for raw and cooked food.

Nice-to-Have Extras

  • Smoker box or wood chips for adding smoke flavour to a gas grill
  • Cast-iron pan or griddle for searing, eggs and smash burgers
  • Cedar planks for salmon and vegetables
  • Skewers (metal, or wooden soaked in water) for kebabs
  • Headlamp or grill light for evening cooking
  • Spare propane tank so you never run out mid-cook

How to Care for Your BBQ Tools

Wash tongs, spatulas and brushes in hot soapy water after each use. Dry stainless tools completely to prevent spotting. Store tools indoors over the winter to prevent rust. Check your thermometer each season by placing it in ice water: it should read 0°C (32°F).
